Sustainability

We Really Do Care

Saltrock Head Office is based on the rolling hills of the North Devon Coastline, so for us sustainability is about making great value clothes that our customers can wear over and over again, whilst reducing and minimising our environmental impact to protect our countryside and coastlines for generations to come. We are committed to challenging ourselves in everything we do to find better and more sustainable resources and ways of working.

Join our journey to a sustainable future with our eco-friendly collection. Stylish yet strong, there’s no better way to spend your summer than looking awesome whilst caring for the planet.

 Recycled Tees

Our recycled shirts are designed to protect you from the sun. Loose fit, cut for room and comfort. 96% recycled polyester with a cotton-feel.

Suitable for surf and turf with quick-drying properties, these Tees can be worn as hybrid rash-vest alternatives in the water. These tees are a great step forward in our journey to becoming eco-friendly and more environmentally conscious.

Our customers have responded overwhelmingly to this new range so we are looking to produce more like this in the future. Credits go to our in-house design team for this monumental achievement.

Available in red and white, these tees will have you feeling light as a feather as you explore the outdoors this year.

"Corporate social responsibility is a hard-edged business decision. Not because it is a nice thing to do or because people are forcing us to do it... because it is good for our business"

- Karl Plank, Managing Director

Encouraging Good Habits

Here at Saltrock we are believers in encouraging sustainable habits. Aligned with our core ethos which is centred around the idea of getting people out in nature i.e. Live For The Open Spaces, encouraging sustainable habits is an integral part of who we are. Disconnection from nature makes simple to dismiss it in favour of our own interests and harder to detect changes, therefore

This is initiated from our employees' very first day working for the brand where they are gifted a re-usable bamboo mug in order to discourage the use of single use cups.

We are big supporters of the 2 minute beach clean ethos which seeks to encourage those living in beach-side towns to make beach-cleaning a habit. If you're on the beach, picking up some of the litter that is left there can become second nature with purposeful practice. If everyone shared this ethos our beaches would be clean in no time at all, creating a nicer visual environment and improving conditions for marine life.

The world's oceans have absorbed much of the heat, and they are presently warmer than they have been in the last 50 years. The top layer of the water has changed the most, warming at a pace of 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit per ten years. As the oceans continue to warm, the deeper waters will be affected as well. Warmer oceans are a problem since they have an impact on weather patterns like tropical storms.

Cyclescheme

Cyclescheme is a HMRC approved scheme provider of the Governments Green Transport Plan which aims to reduce environmental pollution, promote healthier lifestyles, and make cycling to work cost-effective by offering tax savings on bikes and cycling equipment. At Saltrock, 4 of our current employees have taken part in the scheme, enabling them to get their hands on awesome bikes to ride to work whilst saving money.

Cycling to work is a simple way to reduce your carbon footprint. Bicycles require less materials to produce and are a pollution free alternative to driving to work. Biking to work has the added benefit of lowering the number of vehicles on the road. It may seem insignificant, but by taking a car off the road, you are assisting in the reduction of traffic congestion. The less motor traffic on the road, the fewer vehicles will be stuck in traffic, emitting pollutants. Your little bike ride may seem insignificant, but it makes a big difference.

 2 Minute Beach Cleans

We are big supporters of the 2-minute beach clean ethos which seeks to encourage those living in beach-side towns to make beach-cleaning a habit. If you're on the beach, picking up some of the litter that is left there can become second nature with purposeful practice. If everyone shared this ethos our beaches would be clean in no time at all, creating a nicer visual environment and improving conditions for marine life.

Every time we shoot lifestyle on the beach (every few weeks), our photographers, models, and brand directors partake in beach cleans. This movement was initiated by one of our models Ed, who is lifelong beach clean enthusiast and community influencer.

 Ambassadors

Saltrock Ambassador Andrew Cotton is very environmentally conscious and was one of the main drivers of the new eco-friendly range. His work cleaning beaches and documenting plastic pollution in Nazare is particularly inspiring because he is a well-known figure in the surfing community and such an icon to the kids in Devon.

It's important for the future of the planet for our kids to have eco-conscious figures to look up to because it's their actions in their lifetime that will ultimately dictate the fate of our planet.

Waste Disposal

All of our waste is appropriately disposed of at our distribution centre in Bideford.

In the last year we have managed to reduce our paper waste by up to 90% by going paperless in our head office. Contracts, starter packs, newsletters and policies are all now digital. Our stores, whilst not plastic free have managed to reduce their plastic output by replacing plastic bags with paper bags which are of course recycled.

Our waste is managed by Perry's, a local waste management firm who are passionate about providing ethical, reliable and environmental solutions and working with customers towards zero waste to landfill alternatives.

Looking Forward

At Saltrock, we recognise that everyone has a way to go in terms of becoming a more sustainable, but this is something that we accept and are actively working towards in 2021. Negating the effects of climate change is the collective responsibility of everyone in our economy, from producers to consumers. Only through education and constant evaluation can we hope to strive towards a more positive future.

Things we are looking to bring back this year:

Single-use Bodyboard Bins

Outside our stores we used to have a bin/collection point for holiday markers to drop off their broken bodyboards. However, thanks to the amazing work of Plastic Free North Devon there are significantly less single use bodyboards being sold in Devon so we ended the scheme. As our store expansion increases, this is something we are going to re-introduce in collaboration with local councils where are stores are located.

Beach-side Drain Pipe Bins

We are committed to providing drain-pipe bins on the beaches of every town where our stores are located. These are small, conveniently places bins designed for discarding small amounts of beach litter. This is something we hope to achieve in the near future.
