After a Summer when the beaches are packed full of tourists and people enjoying the sunshine, the routine beach cleans seem to end, and the need to protect our coastlines all year round tends to get forgotten about. The increasingly strong hurricane season coming from the North Atlantic combines with the sheer volume of plastic that has entered the sea during the summer to create a “Perfect Storm” of plastic pollution. Summer may be over, but there’s still a multitude of plastic pollution our oceans, and we need to come together and protect the coastlines and beaches we love.
One of the simplest ways to protect the beaches and coastlines we love is to take part in a beach clean. It’s quite simple, just head down to your nearest beach and spend some time walking along collecting any rubbish you see.
Whether it’s on your own before a surf, with the dog, or with family and friends you can do your own beach clean, and share your efforts using the hashtag #minibeachclean.
However, if you want to be part of a bigger movement, there are Beach Cleans being organised all over the country with Surfers Against Sewage. SAS have Regional Reps who organise beach cleans in their local area, as well as reporting local pollution incidents, actions for local campaigns and contributing to advice on the bigger campaign policies and scientific reports.
The Regional Reps have been hard at work organising the Autumn Beach Cleans in their local areas, from Scotland to the South West, so find a beach clean near you and join in! Not only do the beach cleans help remove pollution that will end up hurting marine life, they also create a great sense of community, unity and empowerment in local areas, and nationally.
The Big Autumn Beach Clean takes place during the last week of October, so what are you waiting for? Find your nearest beach clean here and join in!
