Here at Saltrock, we love the sea, and any events that involve getting in the water or watching some great watersports events, it’s a great way to spend the day with the family, and there are so many different things going on this Summer to get involved with. We thought we’d create a list of our Top 10 events across the South West this Summer, whether you’re on holiday or a local!
Newquay, home to the infamous Fistral beach, and Watergate Bay, is a super popular destination for staycations throughout the summer. Surfers love it, so it’s the perfect place for Boardmasters Festival to be held – the festival combines surfing, skating and live music to create a beachside festival full of fun and sports. Surfing events range from international professional surfers to amateurs, and you can even book your very first surf lesson and get inspired! The Line-up this year includes Two-Door Cinema Club, The Vaccines, Lethal Bizzle and Gorgon City, and it’s 9-13th August, so check it out if you’re looking for a fun-filled festival with a surfing twist! This year, Looe is playing host to the GP14 National Championship! This is a great sailing event that brings lots of people to the small town of looe, and makes for a great weekend full of sailing, entertainment, food and fun. Looe previously hosted the World Championships in 2012, and was shortlisted for an award for Yachts and Yachting event of the year, only losing out to the Olympics, so you can be sure that they know how to put on a fun event! It’s on from 6-11th August, so why not head down, and pay a visit to our Looe store while you’re there?
Love Snorkeling? Wembury Marine Centre is running a number of Snorkel Safaris throughout the summer, at different skill levels. If you’ve snorkelled before, there are Experienced sessions, where you just get taken through a refresh of the basic techniques before heading out into Wembury Bay. If you’re more of a beginner, they are also running taster sessions aimed at beginners. It’s a great opportunity to get out into the water and explore, don’t forget to pop into our local Saltrock Store in Plymouth to get some warm hoodies to wrap up in afterwards!
Want to celebrate the sea in a different way? Fishstock is a Seafood & Music Festival in Brixham celebrating the produce from the sea, and it’s raising money for the Fishermen’s Mission, a charity that provides emergency support as well as practical, financial and emotional care for active, retired, and families of fishermen. Not only does Fishstock celebrate local seafood, music and arts, it also is running an education zone, which is the perfect place to introduce your kids to seafood, and learn how to prepare seafood in different ways for the family. It’s going to be a great day on 9th September, so head down to Brixham and be sure to pop into our Saltrock store to pick up some clothes for everyone!
Heading to Brighton this summer? Don’t miss out on the Paddle Round the Pier! Every year, Paddle Round the Pier involves a series of water-based activities over a weekend, and surrounded by the “Paddle Village” – an area full of retail, entertainment and exhibition stands. The range and number of events grows each year, from fun things such as “Paddle Something Unusual” and the “Paddle” where everyone paddles around the Pier en masse, to more serious events requiring an element of athleticism such as the SUP Race Sprints and the 2.5km Swim. It’s a great event for the family, whether you take part or just spectate, it’s sure to be a weekend of fun!
The oldest open air sea baths in the UK, Lymington Sea Baths have been running since 1833 and the 2017 season has now started! It’s developed from a simple sea water bath to a 110m leisure pool with facilities including an inflatable obstacle course, SUPs, Zorbing, Kayaks, Aqua Jousting and more, so it’s perfect for a family day out! There are also changing facilities, showers and a café/kiosk, as well as a children’s splash pool and sandpit. Make sure you pay these sea water baths a visit this summer, and pop into our Lymington store while you’re there – we’ve got clothing at great prices for all the family.
Dartmouth Royal Regatta is a long-standing regatta run since 1822 by the 3 sailing clubs on the River Dart – Dartmouth Yacht Club, Dittisham Sailing Club and Royal Dart Yacht Club. It’s a few days full of sailing competitions, rowing competitions, and entertainment such as air displays, a variety of activities for kids, “Regatta Rock” - an evening of live music in the big marquee, the Masquerade Ball and an evening of fireworks. There’s something for everyone at this 3-day event, and it’s a great place to watch some sailing and rowing on the River Dart. Why not pay our Dartmouth store a visit while you’re there? Want to SUP for charity? SUP for cancer is a great event held in Southampton on 25th June – the premise is simple – turn up and raise money for Cancer Research UK by entering the paddle event and many other activities throughout the day. There will be 3 different distances, so you can choose which distance to paddle depending on your ability- it’s all about having fun and raising money for a great cause! If you enjoy looking around old castles and exploring, there’s a great opportunity to do something different – Hurst Castle can be explored by Kayak and SUP! With the New Forest Paddle Sport Company, you can have a 2 hour long instructor-led SUP or kayak along the Keyhaven River to the castle, which you’ll then be given the opportunity to explore, along with views to the Isle of Wight and the Needles. A perfect family adventure if you’re near Lymington or Southampton, and make sure you pop into one of our local stores so you have a hoodie to warm up after your adventure!
Falmouth, in Cornwall, is a popular destination for people from all over the country, and Falmouth Week is a week full of yacht and sailing races in Falmouth Bay. As well as the boat races, there are a number of shoreside events each day, from a variety of markets to entertainment and music both daytime and evening. It’s a great week full of things to do for everyone, from the sailors, to their families and other visitors. Make sure you pop into ourlocal store to get some great offers on clothing as well!

Looking for something slightly different? New Forest Activities are running "paddle to the pub" sessions along the Bealieau River, near Lymington this summer! You’ll start at the canoe site at Baileys Hard, spend 90 minutes paddling along the River to finish at the Master Builders House Hotel where you can enjoy the rest of your evening. It's the perfect way to spend a summer evening, and you can reward yourself with a pint at the end!
