Finding Time To Give Back

Volunteering with The Wave Project North Devon

I don’t know about you but sometimes home, which in my case is North Devon, can start to feel a bit small. There is a whole world out there yet my days then weeks can sometimes start to look and feel the same?  In a more perfect world I would love to travel the world but sometimes dropping everything to travel is not possible and so it got me thinking, what can you do to step outside of your usual routine?  You could join a club, find a new hobby or set yourself a challenge. Or, have you ever thought about giving back, helping out, sharing some of your time, talents or company?  Could the answer be to try your hand at volunteering…

Locally and nationally there are lots of amazing opportunities and organisation out there that are always looking for people to donate their time and talents.

Sometimes the idea of signing up to be a volunteer can seem daunting and a scary commitment of time but it definitely does not have to be!  Over the last few years I have volunteered my time and have found that no matter how much or little time you have to give it is always appreciated and results in some amazing experiences.

One great charity in North Devon is The Wave Project ( ).  The Wave project has been running at Croyde beach since 2013, providing local children with 6 week long surf programs. You might have heard a little bit about what they do and know that they are always looking for people to sign up to provide one to one support in the water for children learning to surf during their course.  This is a fantastic role to sign up for and a great way to spend an afternoon each week meeting and working with new people that will truly appreciate your time.

If you are not able to commit to the full 6 weeks program (comprising of meeting at the beach for the surf sessions from 1.30pm until about 4.30pm) or you are just unsure that stepping into the ocean to volunteer is your ‘cup of tea’, then do not be deterred as there any many things the charity would love some help with.

You could be the perfect person for one of these roles:

Volunteer Surf Mentors

The main ethos of the charity is to help build confidence and lessen anxiety in children through the process of learning to surf.  As a volunteer Surf Mentor you can sign up to help out as a one to one mentor for the 6 week program or during the surf club sessions. The charity would love you to sign up to a full program as it is helps build a more stable environment for the young people but if you only have a bit of spare time you can always share your passion for surfing during the surf club sessions (run for the children who have completed the initial 6 weeks).

Volunteer Drivers

The children nominated for this opportunity come from all over the area, with a wide variety of needs and from a broad range of backgrounds.  The charity is always looking for people willing to drive these young people to and from Croyde beach. As their aim is to make surfing as accessible as possible to every child; even those whose parents or carers are unable to get them to the beach.

Volunteer Event supporters

This years The Wave Project has a busy calendar of surfing, fundraising, training, socials and educational events (see below for the dates).  Each of these events need people to help set up and run them and even more importantly need people to come and support them!

Volunteer Fundraisers

The charity’s aim is to provide completely free surf courses to the participants and family and currently receive no funding; this means they are completely reliant on donations and fundraising.  They are always looking for new ideas on how to raise funds and help during such events. So even if your skills do not lie in surfing or you do not have enough free time to be a Surf Mentor, could you donate some of you skills or time to help fundraise?

Volunteer photographers

Sign up to photograph the surf sessions, surf club or even fundraising events.  The Wave Project is always looking for someone to capture everyone’s first pop up, hand stand or smile in the water and on land.
