Big Waves and Big Dreams - Andrew Cotton's New Year

Big wave surfer and Saltrock Ambassador Andrew Cotton is rarely in one place for long, but while he’s here's in North Devon waiting for the next swell we took the opportunity to grab a quick brew and talk about his highlights of 2015, and discover what 2016 has in store for him.

What are your best memories from 2015?

Becoming a Saltrock Ambassador is definitely up there! Surfing wise though it would be a wave I caught in Ireland last January, surfing Jaws in Hawaii for the first time and spending a month in Portugal with my family training and surfing.

What goals did you smash in 2015?

A big goal for me last year was to have fun with my surfing which I definitely have.

Any goals you didn’t quite hit that you plan to smash in 2016?

I set my goals really high and even if I don't reach them I don't see that always as a failure, although that biggest wave ever surfed always is the carrot dangling! Ha-ha

What were your stand out moments of the year professionally?

The premieres of my movie Deeper, so many people turned up and supported. It was great to see.

And were there any stand out personal moments of the year you don’t mind sharing with us?

My son Ace’s first stand up wave on a surfboard, he was 3.  Always a special moment.

What did you try for the first time in 2015?

I spent a week at the Red Bull High Performance training camp in Bermuda where I managed a 5 minute breath hold and free dived to 100ft on my second day which I was pretty stoked about.

Which places did you visit in 2015 that you would recommend Saltrock fans visit ASAP?

The Azores, you gotta go!

What is your New Year resolution?

Dream bigger!

What big projects do you have coming up in 2016?

A Red Bull surf project which has been in the pipeline for over 4 years!

What do you plan to achieve professionally in 2016?

Big waves, moving pictures and hopefully awards!

Is there anything you plan to achieve personally in 2016?

I’m looking forward to travelling with my family, and spending quality time with my wife Katie and our kids. I’m also looking forward to taking my parents to Portugal to watch me surf big waves for the first time ever.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

Surfing more!

Are there any countries you plan to visit in 2016?

This is one of the best benefits of being a surfer! My travel plans include America, Fiji, Hawaii, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, France and Ireland. I may have missed a couple! Ha-ha

What will you try for the first time next year?

I’d like to live a cleaner lifestyle and eat more organically. It's a tough one when you spend so much time travelling but whenever I do it I feel so much better. That’s something I plan to focus on in 2016.
