We’ve had a great response to our behind the scenes film clip from the latest Spring / Summer Photoshoot in Croyde.

Saltrock Spring/Summer Photoshoot – Behind the Scenes from Saltrocksurf on Vimeo.

The shoot took place right in the heart of Croyde. We had planned to use the fabulous new studio Kev recently built in his garden, but in the end we made the call to get closer to the beach and after some sweet talking (begging), we borrowed a friend’s beach house for the day, just off Croyde beach.

We were really keen to capture the essence of Croyde in the film clip, and we think our man with a plan Jamie has done just that. With some dreamy panoramas of the point and other unmistakable Croyde scenes, we love the film clip because it takes you away from the daily grind to a dreamy vision of sunshine and simple pleasures.

We’re already talking about the next film clip, and I can’t wait.

This is it, Olympic fans! There are only 100 days to go until the London Olympics officially kicks off, and events are going on all over the country to mark the build up as it turns into the home straight. And in a timeless British style, it’s a shame about the weather!

The slogan for the London Olympics has been revealed today. There have been many suggestions prior to the announcement, some positive, some not so much, but the official slogan for the London Olympics will be “Inspire a generation”. What do you think? A gigantic set of Olympic rings will be revealed today at Kew Gardens, made up of 25,000 flowers and designed to be visible to planes flying in and out of Heathrow. The first of 40 oak trees grown from acorns collected from a tree planted in 1890 in honour of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who is regarded as the founder of the modern Olympic Games, will be planted at the gardens by Seb Coe, and athletes and West End stars will perform in Trafalgar Square.

Earlier in the week, luckily in much better weather, children helped build a huge sandcastle decorated with flags and Olympic rings in Weymouth to help celebrate the countdown.

And in what we think is the stand out show of them all, London’s Horse Guards Parade, 250 members of the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots and Welsh Guards stood in the shape of the number 100 to mark the day.

Next month a 70 day torch relay around the country will begin the real countdown to the big event. The torch will be carried through Braunton on Monday May 21st by Andy Seward, Julie Clawson and Sue House.

And today the Ministry of Defence has announced that the Red Arrows will perform a fly past across the UK to mark the opening of the games.

The build up is as important for some as the actual games themselves, and most people agree that the way in which London ‘welcomes the world’ will form a large part of how the world views Great Britain for many years to come.

Public opinion is still divided on whether the games will be good for the country, and whether the cost is justifiable in the current tricky economic climate. There are plenty of grumbles and groans and doomsayers predicting the end of life as we know it because the Olympics is coming to London, but there are plenty of people who, like me, are excited about the prospect of hosting the greatest show on earth in our back yard.

I’m certainly looking forward to the start of London 2012 (even though I didn’t get any tickets, hmmmm). Its a reason to be cheerful, a great opportunity to show the world how great it is to be British, and I’m behind our team every step of the way.

Go Team GB!

This weekend Cardiff International Pool hosted the SLSGB British Life Saving Pool Championships, and Saltrock’s very own Carl Priscott won gold in one of the toughest tests of fitness and athleticism in the competition.

Every year Surf Life Saving GB hosts national competitions in the pool, on the beach and in the surf. Surf Life Saving GB is a charity of over 5,000 volunteers helping to make our beaches a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone – volunteers have been providing beach lifeguard training and patrolling the coast for more than 55 years.

With close ties to swimming, athletics, kayaking, rowing, surfing and power boating and all based on the equipment and skills of lifeguards, Surf Life Saving is a fantastic measure of athleticism and the ultimate test of speed and fitness. SLSGB clubs are nationwide, training members aged from five years upwards in beach education, lifesaving, rescue and fitness skills, helping create fitter and safer communities by the sea.

Carl Priscott is a member of the Croyde Surf Lifesavers, and at this year’s SLSGB British Life Saving Pool Championships he won gold in the 100m manikin tow with fins.

Not content with that, he also won two silvers in the 100m rescue medley and in the 100m manikin carry with fins.

So if you’re planning on getting in trouble in the sea, make sure there’s a crazy guy in a Saltrock hoody nearby.

Well done Carlos!

Its that time of year again when we all start thinking about getting out in the sunshine, so we thought we’d get together and give you a list of our top ten surf-seeking road trips.

Croyde – of course. Great surf, great beach, a load of fun campsites and The Thatch pub – what more could you want?

Woolacombe – if 3 miles of golden sand, great surf and a lively seaside village is what you’re after, then Woolacombe’s the place for you. Loads of fun with great pubs and a nightclub, there are plenty of campsites and hotels to choose from.

Sennen – for those of you who fancy something a bit more remote, Sennen Cove is spectacular. Perched on the very tip of Cornwall, Sennen is slightly more protected than neighbouring Gwenvor and picks up the best of any swell that’s on offer. The beach is stunning, there are loads of campsites and guest houses in the area and the laid back, friendly atmosphere makes it popular with surfers and holiday makers alike.

Watergate Bay– Just 4 miles from the heart of Newquay, Watergate Bay spreads out beneath you as you stand in the car park,

Croyde at its majestic best

with loads of peaks and miles of golden sand underneath the huge cliffs. The Extreme Academy is right on the beach and offers a great range of adrenaline sports including surfing, kitesurfing, waveski, kite buggy, land board and mountain boarding.

Widemouth Bay – Just 3 miles south of Bude, Widemouth is a long stretch of sandy beach with great surf and the sun is on the beach almost all day – sunsets here are fabulous. This stretch of coast is steeped in the smuggling history, and just south of Widemouth bay are some cool little inlets and coves.

Perranporth – Cornwall’s Perranporth has a huge sandy beach, great surf on its day and is a busy little seaside village with pubs, campsites and a youth hostel.

Polzeath – This small Cornish seaside resort is a firm favourite with surfers and tourists, with a fabulous sandy beach, amazing walks, golden sandy beaches and secluded coves.

Praa Sands – Praa is an ancient Cornish word meaning “witch’s cove”. Praa Sands is a long, wide south west facing sandy beach which picks up plenty of swell and is a great, out-of-the-way spot to hang out and relax.

Constantine – Near Padstow, Constantine Beach is a wide sandy beach with loads of rock pools and plenty of sand. Defined by the low headlands and rocky islands that head out to sea, sand dunes back the beach and there is a refreshing lack of amenities giving the whole bay a wild, rugged atmosphere.

Secret Spot – There’s a little known place in North Devon where the water’s clean and green, the scenery’s breathtaking and the waves are sweet. Tucked away, it’s a bit of a bugger to get to but its well worth the trek, and when then sun’s shining you could be anywhere on earth. Sorry but we can’t reveal its location on pain of death. Happy hunting!
