Looking After Your Board

You’ll fall deeply in love with your new board, especially if it’s a custom.  You won’t be able to stop looking at it, you’ll catch yourself touching and stroking it, and when you first bring it home there’s no way it’ll be stored anywhere but your bedroom.  You’ll proudly bring it out to show everyone; even people who have never surfed in their lives, and if someone doesn’t show an adequate level of admiration they will go down significantly in your estimation.  It’s a powerful relationship, and there are several things you can do to prolong the obsession.

Rinse it with fresh water after a surf

Don’t leave it out in direct sunlight.  It’s no good for the glass, and your wax will melt leaving you with a shiny surface.

Every three months or so remove the wax with white spirit and re-apply.  It’s a labour of love and you’ll be amazed at how new and shiny your board looks.

When dings appear, which they will do no matter how much you care, get them fixed as soon as possible.  A crack in the glass will allow the foam core to soak up water, turning your beautiful, pristine board into a spongy, yellow has-been.  Filling a crack with wax as an emergency is something most of us are guilty of, but it’s BAD, as you will realise when your ding repairer starts to cry.

Some relationships are built to last, and some are just a stepping stone to something new.  Many surfers keep their first board forever, but most of the time we outgrow our first love and move on.  If you keep your first board it will probably be from sentiment rather than because it is the best ride you can get.  As your surfing improves you need different things from a board, such as more maneuverability and versatility, which you probably won’t get from your learner board.  Experimentation is important when you are honing your skills, and if you are lucky enough to be able to try out different boards you should jump at the chance.  It amazing how different boards surf, and it will take your surfing to new levels.  If nothing else, it will give you a new found respect for the guys and girls surfing on tiny 6 foot splinters.  And your old plank can always be wheeled out for the one foot days.
